MKL Slams Govt's Wheat Import Decision as 'Anti-Farmer' Policy

The Markazi Kisan League (MKL) has expressed strong opposition to the federal government's decision to import one million tonnes of wheat, labelling it a 'poorly planned and ill-intentioned policy' that undermines the efforts of millions of farmers.

In a joint statement, MKL Chairman Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali Olakh and President Ashfaq Virk stated that Pakistan is an agricultural country and should not rely on imported wheat. They argued that the decision reflects the government's failure to develop an effective agricultural policy.

The leaders pointed out that the government has consistently failed to procure wheat in a timely manner, resulting in heavy financial losses for farmers despite their full-year investment in crop production. They warned that importing wheat while local farmers face rising production costs would discourage future cultivation and increase uncertainty in the agriculture sector.
