Modi's Swadeshi Call: Avoid Gold, Travel Abroad for Leisure
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued an appeal to his citizens to avoid buying gold unless necessary, postpone non-essential foreign travel, and reconsider international destination weddings. The call is aimed at reducing discretionary imports and conserving foreign exchange as global conflicts disrupt trade, energy markets, and supply chains.
The government's concern centers around the significant amount of foreign currency spent on importing gold, which has risen sharply this year. Shipments in the first four months of the financial year were more than 32% higher than a year earlier, with India relying almost entirely on overseas supplies to meet its gold demand.
Modi's appeal is not new, as he made a similar call in May amidst surging crude oil prices and concerns about disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. However, this time around, he has emphasized the importance of swadeshi consumption and self-reliance in supporting India's economic growth.
The government aims to conserve foreign exchange, reduce vulnerability to global shocks, and boost domestic consumption and businesses by promoting local products and services over foreign alternatives.
