Moldova Confronts Security Concerns and EU Accession Deadlines Amid Russian Drone Incursions
Security concerns continue to plague Moldova as Russian drones repeatedly breach its airspace amid ongoing attacks on Ukraine. A series of incidents this week saw drones enter or crash in Moldovan territory, with authorities condemning the increasingly frequent breaches and warning citizens not to approach debris.
The drone incidents are just one of several pressing issues facing Moldova, which is currently navigating a critical period in its European integration process. The country has until September 1 to fulfill key commitments ahead of EU accession talks, with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan holding a telephone conversation with his Latvian counterpart Andris Kulbergs to discuss measures needed to advance Moldova's European path.
Meanwhile, household consumers will face a significant increase in natural gas tariffs, with the National Agency for Energy Regulation approving a hike of 5.88 lei per cubic meter. This is over 40% higher than previous prices, and authorities attribute the rise to regional energy crisis and higher procurement costs.
