Moldova Gas Prices Soar as Global Energy Markets Surge
Moldova is bracing for a significant increase in gas prices ahead of winter, as global energy benchmarks surge. According to estimates, natural gas prices could rise by nearly 6 MDL (€0.31) per cubic meter, while electricity rates may increase by up to 10%. The government has stated that it cannot control external market fluctuations but is pursuing measures to cushion the impact on households.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan warned of the need to prepare for the cold season, citing global market pressures. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu pointed to several factors driving the surge, including tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and European heatwaves. The Energy Ministry is negotiating with distribution operators to extend meter calibration cycles from current intervals to up to 12 years.
The energy regulator, ANRE, will review a request for a regulated gas price increase to 20.3 MDL (€1.04) per cubic meter including VAT, up from the current 14.42 MDL rate, a 40.8% adjustment.
