Moldova Inflation Hits 7% in August as Fuel Prices Soar
The Republic of Moldova experienced an annual inflation rate of 7% in August 2026 compared to the same month last year. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that consumer prices increased by this amount over the past 12 months.
Fuels and motor fuels saw a significant increase, with diesel fuel rising by 65.3%, gasoline by 32.4%, and liquefied gases by 20.2% compared to August 2025. Coal prices also rose by 15.7%. In terms of monthly growth, fuel prices increased by an average of 6.6% in August.
Regulated tariffs for electricity went up by 23.7%, while water supply and sewage services saw a 10.6% increase. Public catering costs rose by 9.2%. Passenger transport became more expensive by 28% compared to the same period last year. However, regulated tariffs for thermal energy decreased by 17%, and those for natural gas dropped by 13.9%.
Food products showed a mixed trend in August. Fruits and vegetables saw a significant decrease in price, with fruit prices dropping by 7.5% and vegetable prices falling by 6.5%. On the other hand, eggs became more expensive by 2.2%, milk and dairy products rose by 0.8%, wheat flour bread increased by 0.5%, and vegetable oil cost 0.4% more.
