Moldova MP Pushes for Resumption of Grain Import Licensing
An MP from Moldova's 'Our Party' has registered a bill to resume grain import licensing until the end of 2027, citing the need for protection of domestic agricultural producers.
The crisis in the agricultural sector is due to rising production costs, lack of subsidies, accumulated debt, and falling grain prices, according to Sergei Ivanov, Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Agriculture and Food Industry.
The draft stipulates that the government may extend the licensing regime at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry if market conditions so require. The import of wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds will be permitted only with a free license issued by the ministry.
Sergei Ivanov recalls that a similar mechanism was applied in 2024-2025 and had a beneficial effect on Moldovan agricultural producers.
