Moldova Seeks to Diversify Energy Sources, Join European Market

Moldova's Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov, says his country has every chance to become part of the European energy market before becoming an EU member.

The minister pointed out that Moldova has undergone significant transformations in the energy sector since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. After overcoming the energy crisis largely caused by Russia, the country diversified its energy supply sources with the help of Western partners and began to focus on long-term development plans.

The government aims for Moldova to join the EU by 2030 and is working towards becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2050. To achieve this, they are implementing policies such as liberalizing the natural gas market, integrating into the European energy market through interconnections with Romania, and promoting renewable energy sources.

The minister emphasized that synchronizing Moldova's power system with ENTSO-E was a crucial step in ensuring energy security and stability. This process took only three weeks and has enabled the country to diversify its electricity supply sources and reduce dependence on Russian gas.
