Moldova Surpasses Wheat Export Record, But Logistics Challenges Ahead
In July, Moldova achieved a record-breaking wheat export of 567 million lei. The success can be attributed to a high harvest in 2026, with yields expected to exceed 1.5 million metric tons. Despite climate change causing some logistical challenges at the start of the harvest campaign, significant volumes of new-crop commercial wheat became available for export.
The average export price rose by 4% compared to last year, reaching 3.76 lei/kg in July 2026. This increase is noteworthy given that farmers' production costs have risen by 30-40% this year. Market operators have been actively engaging in international trade, showing resilience in the face of challenges.
Logistics played a crucial role in the success, with water, rail, and road transport functioning well in July. Over 90,000 metric tons were exported via waterways, while only about 15,000 metric tons were transported by road.
The top three wheat exporters from Moldova in July were RUSAGRO-PRIM SRL, OROM-IMEXPO SRL, and AGRO-NOVA PRIM SRL, accounting for 64.8% of total exports. However, a potential problem looms on the horizon as part of Moldova's transport logistics capacity will be redirected to transit Ukrainian agricultural raw materials in August.
