Moldovan Farmers Threaten Protests Over Ukrainian Grain Transit
Farmers in Moldova are threatening large-scale protests unless the government regulates Ukrainian grain transit by Friday. The 'Forța Fermierilor' association has been pushing for clear regulations to prevent logistical and customs issues that could impact their exports.
The association, which met with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan three days ago, is concerned about the influx of Ukrainian goods, which they say could significantly impact the local market. They are calling for a licensing system for grain imports from Ukraine, similar to Romania's approach.
The government has committed to convening a meeting this week with farmers and officials from Moldova's infrastructure and railway sectors to discuss the transit process. However, without concrete measures taken by Friday on three key issues, transit control, import licensing, and prevention of a VAT increase, the association reserves the right to organize large-scale protests.
