Moldova's Energy Prices Compared: Neighbors and EU Countries
A recent analysis compared electricity and gas prices in neighboring countries to Moldova's. The study found that energy tariffs vary significantly across different nations, with some being up to 22.9 times more expensive than others.
The research focused on Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Croatia, and several European Union (EU) countries. In August, the Romanian population paid 6.18 Moldovan lei for electricity and 10.99 Moldovan lei for gas. This means that natural gas is approximately 2.3 times cheaper in Romania compared to Moldova.
The analysis highlighted that while EU countries rely heavily on gas imports (87.3% of their consumption), many still pay less for gas than Moldovans do. Only six EU countries, namely Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Portugal, and Italy, have higher natural gas prices than Moldova.
