Moldova's Winter Gas Price Hike Could Hit Households Hard
Moldova is bracing for a significant increase in gas prices ahead of winter as global energy benchmarks surge. According to official estimates, natural gas prices could rise by nearly 6 Moldovan Lei (MDL) per cubic meter, while electricity rates may increase by up to 10%. The government has acknowledged that it cannot control external market fluctuations but is working on measures to mitigate the impact on households.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated during a recent government session that 'we must prepare for the cold season. Unfortunately, the commodity exchanges are not helping us.' Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu attributed the price hike to external factors such as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, European heatwaves, reduced hydroelectric output, and regional nuclear plant outages.
The energy regulator, ANRE, is set to review a request from state energy trader Energocom for a regulated gas price increase to 20.3 MDL per cubic meter including VAT, up from the current rate of 14.42 MDL, a 40.8% adjustment. To offset external costs, the Energy Ministry is negotiating with distribution operators to extend required meter calibration cycles from current intervals to up to 12 years, aligning with European practices.
