Morgan Stanley Warns Oil Spike Threatens US Stocks Amid $100 Brent Forecast

Morgan Stanley has raised its forecast for Brent crude oil prices to $100 per barrel by the end of this year, citing a slower-than-expected supply recovery in the Middle East. The bank now expects Brent to average around $90 per barrel in the third quarter of 2026, peak near $100 in the fourth quarter, and settle at $95 in the first quarter of 2027.

The upgrade stems from a decline in floating storage and crude exports from the region, which have retreated toward levels last seen in March and April. This has led Morgan Stanley to expect the supply repair process to extend well into 2027, keeping the market in deficit through the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

The bank's chief US equity strategist, Michael Wilson, warns that a renewed spike in oil prices poses the single biggest near-term threat to American equities. He notes that stocks get hurt more by a crude price spike than they benefit from a dip, with the beta of oil relative to equities being roughly twice as impactful when Brent rises compared with when it falls.

Wilson has previously quantified the threshold at which oil becomes genuinely damaging for stocks: historically, equities face serious trouble only when crude prices surge 75% to 100% year over year. With a fourth-quarter forecast of $100 Brent, the year-over-year surge would push much closer to this danger zone.
