Morogoro Motorists Set for 60pc Fuel Cost Cut with New CNG Station

A new compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling station is set to open in Morogoro, Tanzania in October, promising a 60% cut in fuel costs for motorists and auto-rickshaw operators.

The station, constructed by Natenergy/MoroPower, will serve between 600 and 800 vehicles daily and is expected to employ 20-25 people.

According to project consultant Mercy Chilumba, the cost of using CNG is significantly lower than liquid fuel. One kilogramme of CNG retails for between Sh1,950 and Sh2,150 in Morogoro, compared to Sh5,777 for 1.5 litres of petrol or Sh5,898 for diesel.

This means that a driver covering an equal distance of 15 kilometres will spend roughly Sh2,150 on CNG instead of nearly Sh5,777 on petrol, saving about 63%, or Sh5,898 for diesel, saving nearly 64%.
