Most Americans Misjudge Gas Price Hikes Amid Ongoing Conflict
A recent survey reveals that nearly three in five Americans overestimate the increase in gas prices. According to a Politico poll, respondents believe the cost of fuel has risen more than data shows. The average price of gas is around $4, fluctuating since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran earlier this month.
The conflict in the Middle East has driven up oil prices, with international benchmark Brent crude crossing the $100 mark. Futures trading sits at about $101 per barrel, up more than $25 from its pre-conflict level. The survey found that 46% of voters believe gas prices could influence their vote in the primaries and midterm election.
Interestingly, self-identified MAGA Republicans are more likely to underestimate cost increases than other GOP voters. A separate Politico poll also found support for the Iran war among President Trump's followers is falling, dropping by 13 points in recent weeks.
