Mozambique Gas Sector Booms as LNG Projects Restart
Mozambique's gas sector is on the move after years of stagnation. The country's most significant LNG project, Mozambique LNG, has resumed development following a five-year hiatus. TotalEnergies announced in January 2026 that it would restart the project, which will produce 12.9 million tons per annum (mtpa) from the Area 1 concession in the Rovuma Basin. The project is expected to reach full production by 2029 and represents a $20 billion investment.
Eni has also made significant strides with its Coral North floating LNG project, which will add 3.6 mtpa to Mozambique's combined LNG capacity. ExxonMobil's Rovuma LNG project is advancing rapidly, with the company having passed a front-end engineering milestone and moving towards a final investment decision.
The government of Mozambique aims to use its gas wealth to drive industrialization, job creation, and expanded energy access for local households and businesses. The country has significant renewable energy potential, with targets set for hydropower and solar development in the next decade.
