Mozambique's LNG Ambitions Take Shape
Mozambique is poised to become a major liquefied natural gas exporter after ExxonMobil announced preliminary offshore engineering agreements for Rovuma LNG on September 10. The development involves 18 wells and associated subsea infrastructure, with a final investment decision expected in 2026.
The country has substantial discovered gas resources, but the challenge is connecting these to processing plants, shipping infrastructure, and paying customers, while keeping the entire system operating for decades.
Coral South, led by Eni, shipped its first cargo in November 2022, with annual liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tonnes. Coral North aims to extend this offshore model, with a final investment decision expected in October 2025 and completion scheduled for 2028.
