Mozambique's LNG Sector Experiences Resurgence as Delayed Projects Resume
Mozambique's liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector is experiencing a resurgence as major delayed projects resume, led by TotalEnergies' Mozambique LNG and ExxonMobil's Rovuma LNG.
The sector had been stalled for years due to security challenges, force majeure declarations, and project delays. However, with the lifting of force majeure, TotalEnergies has resumed full project activities on its 13-metric-ton-per-annum (MTPA) Mozambique LNG development, targeting first LNG in 2030.
The revival is significant as it shifts Mozambique from a stalled opportunity to a major export hub in the global LNG supply chain. The wider market impact is substantial, with global LNG buyers seeking supply diversification and new LNG supply from East Africa easing tightness in the second half of the decade.
Main projects to watch include Mozambique LNG (TotalEnergies) with a total investment value of around $15 billion and Rovuma LNG (ExxonMobil) with a total investment value of around $20 billion. The Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence Oil & Gas Production Project Database offers key details on these projects.
The revival also presents opportunities for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) players and supply-chain companies, as major packages in engineering, procurement, fabrication, marine logistics, commissioning, and support infrastructure are required. However, security in Cabo Delgado remains a significant execution risk, tied to militant attacks and force majeure declarations.
