Mozambique's LNG Sector Sees Momentum with TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil Projects Resuming
Mozambique's liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector is experiencing a resurgence in activity, driven by major projects such as TotalEnergies' Mozambique LNG and ExxonMobil's Rovuma LNG. After years of delays due to security challenges, force majeure declarations, and project setbacks, the country is now poised to become a significant player in the global LNG supply chain.
According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are 45 active capital LNG projects in Africa with a total investment value of $87.38 billion. TotalEnergies has resumed full project activities on its Mozambique LNG development, which is expected to produce around 13 metric tons per annum (MTPA) and first LNG by 2030.
ExxonMobil's Rovuma LNG project, with a capacity of 18 MTPA, is also making progress. The company plans to pursue a final investment decision in 2026, which will be crucial for the project's timeline. Eni's Coral Norte FLNG project is another notable development in Mozambique's LNG sector.
The revival of these projects has significant implications for global LNG markets. With new supply coming from East Africa, buyers can expect improved diversity and reduced reliance on traditional suppliers. This shift could also lead to more favorable pricing dynamics and increased flexibility in long-term contracting.
