Mumbai Sees Triple Whammy: Milk, CNG, Taxi Fares Hike
Mumbaikars will face significant financial pressure as prices of milk, CNG, and taxi-rickshaw fares have increased from September 1, 2026.
The price of fresh buffalo milk in Mumbai has risen by Rs 9 per litre to Rs 102 per litre, with retail rates potentially reaching Rs 115-125 per litre. The hike is attributed to a 60-70% jump in milch animal acquisition costs and a 25% rise in feed prices.
The transport fare revisions were approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) based on the Khatua panel's formula, accounting for fuel and operating costs. The minimum fare for auto-rickshaws has increased to Rs 27 for the first 1.5-km journey, while taxi fares have risen by Rs 2 to Rs 33.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has also raised CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 88 per kg in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), citing higher imported spot re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) costs. The increase will impact household budgets ahead of the crucial festive season.
