Muthoot Finance Shares Plunge on Weak Net Interest Margins

Muthoot Finance shares plummeted by over 11% on August 3 as investors reacted to the gold loan financier's weak net interest margin (NIM) in its first-quarter earnings. The company reported a 297 basis point sequential drop in NIM to 10.41%, missing analyst expectations and prompting at least one brokerage to trim its target price.

The management attributed the decline in NIM to lower lending rates and a normalization in yields following strong interest recoveries and loan renewals in the previous fiscal year, aided by a rally in gold prices. With gold prices softening in recent months, the yield on gold loans declined, squeezing profitability.

Despite the profit growth, analysts believe that while the company's long-term fundamentals remain intact, the near-term outlook is clouded by margin headwinds. The stock's reaction suggests that investors are pricing in a more cautious scenario, with profitability expected to moderate from recent peaks.
