Nagel Sees ECB as Ready to Tackle Energy Price Shock
European Central Bank (ECB) President Joachim Nagel believes that the ECB is well-positioned to respond to surging energy prices. Speaking on Friday, July 24, Nagel emphasized the importance of taking incoming data into account before making any decisions regarding interest rates in September.
The ECB left interest rates unchanged on Thursday, but offered strong clues that a hike in September is likely due to rising oil and natural gas prices. Oil prices are currently around $100 a barrel, while natural gas prices are also surging.
Nagel stated that the rate hike in June has put the ECB in a good position to monitor further developments closely. However, he noted that the situation in the Middle East remains highly fragile and uncertain.
