Naval Conflict Escalates, Threatening Global Food Supplies Amid War

The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War has escalated into a naval conflict, threatening to disrupt global food supplies and potentially leading to famine in regions that rely on exports from both Russia and Ukraine.

Russia has begun attacking Ukrainian ports, including Chornomorsk, one of the country's primary grain-export gateways, disrupting its Black Sea logistics. As a result, Ukraine's wheat and corn exports have fallen 17% during the first full week of July.

The combined exports from Russia and Ukraine made up nearly 30% of global wheat exports before the war began, with Russia being the world's largest wheat exporter and Ukraine being the Black Sea region's leading corn exporter. The loss of these exports could have significant implications for countries that rely heavily on imported cereals.

According to Jennifer Weatherall, senior technical advisor for cash, markets and food security at Catholic Relief Services, 'if disruptions in the Black Sea continue or intensify, the risk is that current market pressures could evolve into broader food security impacts.'
