Naval Conflict Escalation Raises Famine Fears in Ukraine-Russia War
The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War has escalated into a naval conflict, putting regions that rely on food exports from both Russia and Ukraine at risk of famine.
Russia has begun attacking Ukrainian ports in retaliation for Ukraine's strikes on Russian-operated shadow fleet merchant ships, disrupting grain exports from the region. According to Reuters, Ukraine's wheat and corn exports fell 17% during the first full week of July due to Russian attacks on Black Sea logistics.
The Russian grain export forecast has fallen from 2.1 million tons in July 2025 to 1.5 million tons in July 2026, while Ukraine's monthly grain-shipping capacity has declined from 6 million metric tons to 4 million metric tons, the Moscow Times reported.
Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasting Russian exports of 47.5 million metric tons in the 2026-2027 trade year, while Ukraine is the Black Sea region's leading corn exporter and the fourth-largest worldwide.
