Naval Mines Strike Two Tankers in Strait of Hormuz
Two oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz were struck by naval mines on Monday, disabling them. The crew was evacuated after warnings. This attack follows a broader confrontation between Iran and the US.
The CNBC report tied the mine incident to retaliatory strikes, saying Iran's military made strikes on US bases in the Middle East after US forces completed a fresh round of strikes against Iran on Tuesday stateside.
According to Reuters, two supertankers carrying Saudi oil were struck by unknown projectiles within minutes of each other while transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz late on Monday. The tankers loaded 2 million barrels of Saudi crude at the Juaymah terminal last week.
The Saudi Arabian-flagged very large crude carrier Sidr was struck about 16.6 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, while the Liberian-flagged VLCC Senegal Prosperity was hit minutes later about 17 nautical miles east of Khasab.
