Nebraska Farmers Turn to Unconventional Feed Source Amid Drought
Pasture and hay are in short supply in much of Nebraska due to drought conditions. Corn prices are currently below the cost of production, which is prompting consideration of grazing standing corn with the cow herd as a feed option for the rest of the summer, fall, and winter.
Nebraska Extension Livestock Educator Aaron Berger suggests that grazing standing corn can be done in drought conditions. This method allows farmers to utilize what would otherwise be a waste product from their fields. Standing corn is not suitable as cattle feed due to its low nutritional value, but it can be used as a supplement during periods of food scarcity.
