Nepal Oil Corporation Seeks Solution to Chronic LPG Shortages
The Nepal Oil Corporation has been dealing with LPG supply challenges for years. Director Binita Mani Upadhyay discussed the issue in an interview, highlighting the need for a regular and reliable gas supply.
Upadhyay explained that artificial shortages occur due to international tensions or minor technical disruptions in transportation, leading to consumers standing in long queues with empty cylinders. To address this issue, the corporation distributed half-cylinders (7.1 kg) of gas during past crises, such as the 2072 blockade and the COVID pandemic.
During the recent gas crisis, Upadhyay noted that the main reason for the shortage was not the international situation but rather the psychological fear of consumers. The corporation distributed half-cylinders again, which resulted in a decrease in imports and problems in the Indian Oil refinery.
The Nepal Oil Corporation is working on long-term plans to end gas shortages permanently. A study has been completed for laying an LPG pipeline from Motihari to Sarlahi, and discussions have been held with Indian Oil Corporation to advance the project. The corporation aims to build its own storage capacity within Nepal and load LPG within the country, reducing dependence on Indian bullets.
