Nepal's LPG Gas Shortage: A Crisis Born of Import Failures and Managerial Negligence

Nepal is experiencing a severe LPG gas shortage due to import failures and managerial negligence. The crisis has been ongoing for months, with consumers waiting in line for up to a week to refill their empty cylinders.

The government's failure to manage gas supply led to the resignation of Industry, Commerce and Supply Minister Gauri Kumari, who had promised to 'severely deal with' gas businessmen. Her successor, Deepak Shah, has pledged to discuss ways to make gas easily available after taking office.

However, Nepal Oil Corporation's internal data shows that the shortage is a direct result of serious negligence in imports and managerial failure. The corporation imported 95,000 metric tons less gas than required for the fiscal year, exacerbating the crisis.

The corporation claims that transportation problems are to blame, but sources suggest that the inability to bring in quota from India and the government's 'half a cylinder' policy have contributed to the shortage.
