Netherlands Transfers $10 Billion in Gold Reserves from US to UK Amid Rising Tensions
The Netherlands has transferred billions of dollars' worth of its gold reserves from the US to the UK, citing the need for better crisis preparedness. According to the Dutch Central Bank (DNB), the relocation is part of a risk diversification strategy aimed at spreading the risks associated with physical gold relocations.
The move involves the transfer of 10.11 billion euros ($11.73bn) worth of gold, which represents about 30% of the Netherlands' total gold reserves. This includes 59 tonnes of gold sold in New York and bought in London, as well as the physical transportation of gold bars from the US and Canada to Zeist.
The decision to move gold away from the US has been attributed to rising tensions between Europe and the US, particularly with regards to trade wars and military conflicts. Analysts speculate that the Netherlands' desire for physical control over its gold reserves may be driven by concerns about the US's increasingly bellicose behavior towards its allies.
