New York Energy Prices Continue to Outpace National Averages
New York households paid significantly more for electricity in May 2026 compared to the national average. The state's residential electricity price of 29.93 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) was 62.3 percent above the U.S. average, making it the third-highest among all states. Only Hawaii and California reported higher prices.
Compared to April, New York's residential electricity price increased by 1.6 percent, while the national average declined by 2.1 percent, widening the gap between New York and the U.S. average. Since 2019, New York's average electricity price has risen 72.5 percent, outpacing the national increase of 38.5 percent.
When it comes to natural gas, New York's average residential price in May 2026 was $22.74 per thousand cubic feet, which is higher than the U.S. average of $19.83 by 14.7 percent. The state's prices increased by 7.52 percent from April, but were 2.28 percent lower than a year ago.
