New York Gas Prices Reach Historic Highs Amid Ongoing Global Tensions
Retail gasoline prices in New York reached historic highs during August, exceeding $4 per gallon on average nationwide. According to Valerie Puma, a communications specialist with AAA Western Central New York, fuel costs in the state hit their second-highest levels on record since 2022.
The high prices can be attributed to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have driven up global crude oil prices and impacted overall supplies. 'We have been experiencing higher crude oil prices because of an ongoing conflict overseas in the Middle East and with the ongoing issues with the Strait of Hormuz being closed,' Puma said.
The issue is further complicated by seasonal fluctuations in demand due to changes in driver habits during summer months, when travel naturally increases. As a result, fuel formulation also changes, contributing to higher costs during warmer months.
Industry experts suggest that price relief may arrive shortly after the holiday weekend as overall travel and fuel demand begin to decline. A transition to cheaper winter fuel blends should also help lower costs, though the exact timing remains difficult to predict.
