New York Gas Prices Soar to Record Highs Amid Disruptions to Oil Supplies
Gas prices in New York have surged sharply over the past few days, with some drivers seeing increases of nearly 20 cents per gallon in a short period. The statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas is now $4.24, according to AAA.
This represents the highest late-summer average gas price ever recorded at New York pumps, with August 2026 breaking records as the most expensive August and late-summer stretch ever recorded.
Three factors are contributing to this jump in prices: domestic fuel supplies dropped last week due to refineries struggling to keep up with demand; demand rose as people squeezed in final trips before Labor Day; and the ongoing conflict involving Iran is disrupting oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical waterways in the global oil supply chain.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital transit point for a large share of the world's oil, and instability there sends crude oil costs higher worldwide. These increased costs eventually show up directly at local gas stations.
