New York Households Pay Steep Prices for Electricity and Gas
New York households continue to pay above-average prices for electricity and natural gas. In May 2026, the state's residential electricity price was 29.93 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is a staggering 62.3 percent higher than the U.S. average.
This marks a significant increase from April 2026, where prices rose by 1.6 percent. Over the past year, New York's electricity price has increased by 12.1 percent, outpacing the national average of 6.2 percent.
In contrast, natural gas prices in New York were $22.74 per thousand cubic feet in May 2026, which is only 14.7 percent higher than the U.S. average.
