Nigeria Cooking Gas Prices Drop as Imports Surge

Cooking gas prices have begun to decline across several states in Nigeria due to improved local supply, increased imports, and lower wholesale prices.

In Kano, LPG now sells for between N1,400 and N1,600 per kilogram, a drop from previous highs of N1,700 to N1,800 per kilogram. In Ibadan, the price has fallen to between N1,350 and N1,500 per kilogram.

The reduction in prices is attributed to a sharp increase in imports and stronger domestic supply. According to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), LPG imports surged by about 1,400% to 1.5 kilotonnes per day in June.

The Federal Government has also removed import duty and Value Added Tax on cooking gas, compressed natural gas, and electric vehicles to boost cleaner energy adoption. This move is expected to further lower the cost of bringing cooking gas into Nigeria.
