Nigeria Misses Oil Production Target Amid OPEC Quota Success
Nigeria has met its OPEC quota for crude oil production at 1.50 million barrels per day (bpd) for three consecutive months, but it continues to fall short of its own budget target of 1.84 million bpd.
The country's oil output averaged 1.505 million bpd in July, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), with a total liquids output of about 1.67 million barrels per day.
This creates an output gap of 150,000-200,000 barrels per day, which has significant implications for Nigeria's economy and public finances.
The shortfall in oil revenue affects foreign exchange inflows, puts pressure on the naira, reduces government revenues, and increases borrowing. As a result, public debt rises, and more money is spent on debt servicing rather than development projects.
