Nigeria Must Harness Gas Resources for Industrialization
Nigeria's vast natural gas resources can drive industrialization and economic growth if harnessed effectively, according to Ololade Olamide, a Principal Engineer at a major United States liquefied natural gas facility.
Olamide spoke at the Nigerian Society of Engineers conference in Glasgow, Scotland, where he presented a paper titled 'Avoiding the Crude Oil Trap: Using LNG Governance to Build Community and Industrial Opportunity in Lower Southern Nigeria.'
Nigeria has over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, but its liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity remains about 22 million tonnes annually. This disparity highlights the need for the country to move beyond resource extraction and develop industries around its gas resources.
Olamide warned that if Nigeria repeats the experience of crude oil production, where revenues generated have not delivered commensurate industrial opportunities in many producing communities, it could lead to a 'crude oil trap.'
