Nigeria Taps Giant Gas Reserves to Fuel Global Expansion
Nigeria is leveraging its significant gas reserves to attract global buyers and expand liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. According to Olalekan Ogunleye, executive vice president of Gas, Power & New Energy at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), the country has proven 215 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas reserves.
At the 2026 Gas Technology & Exhibition Conference (GASTECH) in Bangkok, Thailand, Ogunleye emphasized that Nigeria's gas development and monetisation strategy is a commercial play, anchored on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), the Decade of Gas Framework, and NNPC's Gas Master Plan (GMP).
The GMP aims to move Nigeria from its current 215tcf of proven reserves to above 600tcf, while ramping up national gas production to 10 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2027 and 12 Bcf/d by 2030.
