Nigerian Government Launches Cooking Gas Programme to Reach Five Million Households

The Nigerian federal government has launched the National Grassroots LPG Programme to make cooking gas more affordable for ordinary Nigerians.

The programme aims to transition five million households away from firewood and charcoal to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 2030, with Bayelsa State as the pilot location.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said that the government has directed gas producers to prioritize domestic supply over exports in order to bring down LPG prices.

Ekpo noted that this intervention has contributed to a reduction in prices and that the programme is designed to ensure Nigeria's natural gas reserves translate into direct benefits for citizens.
