Nigeria's Ambitious Oil Production Target: A Long-Term Goal Amidst Inconsistency
The Nigerian government has set its sights on increasing crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day (mbpd) by 2030, but experts say it's not a short-term goal. Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Ingentia Energies Limited, Engr. Victor Agbaroji, stated that while the target is feasible, it will require massive investments in the oil and gas industry, costing billions of dollars.
The government has already begun implementing strategies to achieve this target, including introducing transparent and competitive licensing rounds and working towards 2.5 million barrels per day by 2027. However, Nigeria's production has been inconsistent, meeting OPEC quotas only a few months in 2024 and 2025.
Nigeria's oil production fell short of its quota in February 2025, producing 1.465 million barrels per day compared to the target of 1.5 mbpd. According to data from the Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) of OPEC, Nigeria's average daily crude oil production for February 2025 was 98% of OPEC quota.
