Nigeria's CNG Push Hits Supply Hurdles Amid Cheaper Transport Targets
Nigeria's compressed natural gas (CNG) push is facing supply challenges as the government targets cheaper transport. The availability of CNG in Nigeria depends not only on its price but also on reliable availability, according to Ismaeel Ahmed, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG/EV).
Ahmed emphasized that developing infrastructure covering gas production, processing, transportation, compression, and distribution is crucial for CNG to deliver sustained savings for motorists and passengers. The government aims to build a new industry around CNG rather than implementing an intervention limited to one part of the energy value chain.
Nigeria has the resources and technology required to develop the industry, but the country must simultaneously create demand and ensure adequate supply. Consumers should not only consider the price displayed at a filling station but also the availability of fuel when making decisions about converting vehicles to CNG.
