Nigeria's Oil Sector Struggles with Revenue Gap Despite Meeting OPEC Quota
Nigeria has successfully met its 1.5 million bpd OPEC quota in July, but faces a $2.49 billion half-year revenue deficit due to structural failures to meet its 2026 budget targets.
The country pumped an average of 1.505 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil in July, which sits comfortably above the 1.50 million bpd quota dictated by OPEC.
The production numbers are a source of deep anxiety for the Ministry of Finance in Abuja, as President Bola Tinubu's ambitious N68.32 trillion budget requires a daily production benchmark of 1.84 million bpd at an oil price of $64.85 per barrel.
Nigeria underproduced its budget target by an average of 213,815 bpd in the first half of 2026, resulting in a lost gross revenue opportunity of approximately $2.49 billion based on the conservative budget benchmark.
