Nigeria's Oil Targets at Risk Without Tech and Capital Investments

Nigeria's target of producing three million barrels of crude oil per day by 2030 may be unachievable without more than just awarding new oil blocks, according to the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council.

The SPE chairman, Francis Nwaochei, stated that while awarding new oil blocks is a positive development, it's only the first step in translating new oil acreage into actual production volumes. He emphasized that converting exploration licences into daily producing volumes requires rapid technology deployment, reservoir precision, and disciplined capital mobilisation.

Nigeria must back exploration licences with technology deployment, infrastructure development, operational efficiency, and access to capital if it hopes to achieve its target. Nwaochei noted that indigenous operators now account for about 60% of Nigeria's oil production, increasing the responsibility on local firms to demonstrate technical competence, financial capacity, and effective management of environmental obligations.
