Nigeria's Pipeline Security: A Crucial Step for Multi-Billion Dollar Gas Deals
A pipeline surveillance firm has emphasized the need for robust security measures to protect Nigeria's $20 billion gas deals. According to Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL), stronger pipeline security is essential to safeguard these investments.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has secured over $20 billion in Gas Sale and Purchase Agreements, covering 1.29 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day for long-term LNG feed gas and an additional 750 million standard cubic feet per day for domestic industrial gas supply.
PINL's General Manager, Community and Stakeholders Relations, Akpos Mezeh, stated that pipeline security is crucial for the future of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP). The AAGP will transport 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, strengthening regional energy security and supporting industrialization.
Bubaraye Dakolo, Ibenanaowei of Epetiama Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, urged the Federal Government to increase funding for pipeline security in the Niger Delta region. He believes that increased funding would address socio-economic factors contributing to pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft.
