Norsk Hydro Cuts Alumina Production Amid Gas Supply Disruption
Norsk Hydro, a leading aluminum producer, has reduced its alumina production at the Alunorte refinery in Brazil due to disruptions in natural gas supply. The company's production has been cut by 50% as it struggles to access reliable gas supplies from CELBA, part of New Fortress Group.
To mitigate the disruption, Norsk Hydro is purchasing spot gas and seeking direct access to the Barcarena LNG receiving and regasification terminal. The company is also exploring alternative long-term gas supplies.
The production cut is expected to negatively impact Norsk Hydro's Bauxite & Alumina business by $75-100 million in Q3 2026, reflecting lower alumina production and higher gas purchases above the contracted price.
