North America's LNG Exports Surge Amid Global Supply Disruptions
Middle East supply disruptions and record-low European storage levels have pushed global natural gas benchmarks to multi-year highs. The sudden outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and damage to Qatari LNG export terminals has cut off roughly 20% of global LNG trade, leaving Europe with its natural gas inventories at 15-year lows.
This has led to a bidding war between European and Asian buyers for spot LNG cargoes. In response, North American LNG exporters have seen their earnings strengthened by higher international premiums on uncontracted capacity.
As a result, the U.S. is expected to see its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity double in the next five years, with several major projects advancing rapidly across the continent. Cheniere Energy and Venture Global have both locked in long-term sales and purchase agreements, providing commercial backing for new construction projects.
