North Korea Rice Prices Soar to Record High Amid Exchange Rate Climb
Rice prices in North Korea have reached an all-time high in July 2026, according to Daily NK's market survey. The price of one kilogram of rice has surged to 40,000 North Korean won in Pyongyang, a 28.2% increase from two weeks earlier.
This marks the highest recorded price since Daily NK began tracking North Korean market prices in 2009. Similar price increases were seen in Sinuiju and Hyesan, with one kilogram of rice selling for 40,200 won and 40,600 won respectively.
The rise in grain prices is attributed to a combination of factors, including falling grain imports and a shortage of substitute crops such as new corn, wheat, and barley. The exchange rate has also contributed to the price surge, with the dollar rate rising by 8.3% over two weeks.
