Northern Railway Cuts Freight Rates for Foodgrains Transportation

The Northern Railway's Jammu Division has revised freight rates for rail transportation of foodgrains to ease inflationary pressure and ensure affordable supply.

The new structure fixes freight charges on a descending distance-based scale. For distances up to 1,000 km, the rate remains Rs 1.55 per tonne per kilometre. For 1,001 to 3,000 km, it's reduced to Rs 1.15 per tonne per kilometre, and the same rate applies for distances beyond 3,001 km.

This move benefits farmers, traders, and consumers by reducing transportation expenses and stabilising market prices of wheat, rice, and flour.

Rail services operate throughout the year, minimising disruptions caused by highway closures due to heavy rain, snowfall, or landslides. Rail transportation also reduces damage to goods and eases traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and pollution.
