Northern Shield Pipeline Proposal Sparks Skepticism Amid Energy Infrastructure Boom

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have proposed a new oil pipeline called Northern Shield, which would connect crude oil production in the prairies with domestic refineries in Ontario.

The 500,000 barrel a day pipeline would be approximately 3,300 kilometers long, stretching from Hardisty, Alta. to Sarnia, Ont., with room to expand to 800,000 barrels per day.

Smith described the project as a 'national imperative', citing that pipelines have gone from being seen as impossible to now being essential for Canada's energy infrastructure.

However, experts and industry insiders are skeptical about the viability of Northern Shield, with John Jeffrey, chief executive of Saturn Oil & Gas Inc., stating that he doesn't see the demand for the line and questioning whether there will be enough supply to fill it in the next 10 years.
