Norway Defies EU Moratorium on Arctic Oil Drilling
Norway is defying European Union (EU) policies by continuing to develop its oil and gas resources in the Barents Sea, despite a moratorium on Arctic hydrocarbon supplies.
The EU enacted the ban in 2021 due to climate commitments and environmental concerns. However, Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland believes that continued activity in the Barents Sea serves both Norwegian and European interests.
Equinor, Norway's largest oil firm, claims that oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Barents Sea can be shipped anywhere in the world if prohibited for use by the EU.
Norway is asking its Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by lower courts against its oil fields. The country has also decided it is no longer Europe's 'green battery' due to integration with Europe's power system causing price swings driven by rising electricity prices from net-zero policies and reliance on intermittent renewables.
