Norway Overtakes Russia as Top EU Natural Gas Supplier
Russia's position as a major natural gas supplier to the European Union has declined significantly over the years, according to recent data. The country's share in EU pipeline natural gas imports has dropped to 6.7%, making it no longer the basis of the European market. Instead, Norway has taken the top spot with a 37.4% share, followed by Algeria at 12.5%. Azerbaijan and Libya trail behind with shares of 4.6% and 0.1%, respectively.
In parallel to this trend, the EU has increased its reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, which now account for 38.7% of total imports. The majority of LNG comes from the United States, with a 22.1% share, surpassing Russia's share in pipeline gas supplies.
Russian LNG still accounts for around 6% of EU imports, despite efforts to push it out of the European market.
