Norway Surpasses US as Top Gas Supplier to European Union
Norway has surpassed the United States to become the European Union's primary gas supplier. According to European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrcinova, Norway currently provides more gas to the EU than the US.
The European Commission reported that preparations to fill gas storage facilities are progressing normally ahead of the heating season. As of now, they are close to 62% capacity, which is below their target of filling 80% of these facilities. Hrcinova noted that this pace is somewhat slower than in previous years.
The EU has been reducing its reliance on Russian gas due to ongoing tensions between the two parties. In June, EU imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose by 14% year-on-year, generating €60 million per day in revenue for Russia. However, this is expected to decrease as the EU continues to phase out Russian LNG under a regulation enacted in February.
